تعريف 1 : نقول عن دالة^[م] $f:J \to \mathbb{R}$ أنها متصلة بانتظام على الفترة J إذا كان لكل $\varepsilon> 0$ يوجد $\delta> 0$ (لا يعتمد على x) بحيث أن

$\left| {f(x) - f(y)} \right| <\varepsilon$

وذلك لكل عدد x,y من J يحققان الشرط $\left| {x - y} \right| <\delta$ .

يتضح من هذا التعريف أن الدالة^[م] المتصلة بانتظام على فترة هي متصلة عند كل نقطة من هذه الفترة. لرؤية ذلك افرض أن f دالة^[م] منتظمة الاتصال على الفترة J وأن c عنصر اختياري من J ولتكن $\varepsilon> 0$ .

حسب الاتصال المنتظم يوجد $\delta>0$ بحيث $\left| {f(x) - f(y)} \right| <\varepsilon$ لكل عدد x,y من J يحققان الشرط $\left| {x - y} \right|<\delta$ .

كحالة خاصة فإن كل $\left| {f(x) - f(c)} \right| < \varepsilon$ لكل $\left| {x - c} \right| <\delta$ مما يعني اتصال f عند النقطة c.

الفرق بين الاتصال (أحيانا يسمى الاتصال النقطي خصوصا عند التعامل معه بوجود الاتصال المنتظم) , والاتصال المنتظم أن المنتظم عند كل قيمة موجبة $\varepsilon> 0$ يوجد قيمة واحدة $\delta > 0$ تعتمد على $\varepsilon> 0$ فقط تناسب كل نقاط الفترة, بمعنى أنها لا تعتمد على تغير x وإنما على $\varepsilon$ فقط ونؤكد ذلك أحيانا بكتابة $\delta = \delta (\varepsilon )$ . على العكس من ذلك الاتصال النقطي فكل $\varepsilon>0$
يقابلها عادة قيمة $\delta> 0$ معتمدة على $\varepsilon$ و x ولذلك نؤكد هذا بقولنا (لكل $\varepsilon> 0$ يوجد $\delta = \delta (\varepsilon,x)$
